What is a Felony?
Felony 1: A first-degree felony includes crimes such as rape, kidnapping, arson, and murder. The maximum sentence for each first-degree felony charge is 20 years in prison. Especially heinous crimes, such as first degree murder, may carry harsher penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Felony 2: A second-degree felony can include statutory sexual assault, indecent assault, and burglary when no one is present in the building. The maximum prison sentence is 10 years for each charge if convicted for a second-degree felony.
Felony 3: A third-degree felony charge includes reckless burning or exploding, terroristic threats, and carrying a gun without a permit.
What is a misdemeanor?
Misdemeanor 1: A first-degree misdemeanor charge can include assault on a sports official, prostitution (for the fourth time), and dealing in infant children. The maximum sentence for a crime under a misdemeanor 1 is 5 years in prison.
Misdemeanor 2: Second-degree misdemeanors include bigamy, false testimony in official matters, and impersonating a public servant. The maximum prison sentence is 3 years if convicted of a second-degree misdemeanor.
Misdemeanor 3: Third-degree misdemeanor charges may include disorderly conduct, loitering, and open lewdness. The maximum prison sentence is 1 year if convicted of a second-degree misdemeanor.
